The whole idea
I am a Spanish-speaking, LGBTQIA-affirming counselor creating a compassionate space in which you can process trauma, pursue fulfillment, and connect with all the parts of yourself.
As an intersectional feminist, I approach therapy as a collaboration between equals, and I believe that you are the authority on yourself. In my practice, I take into account personal and structural issues such as identity, the mind-body connection, power, and privilege — all the things we can and cannot control. Together, we will explore opportunities for the myriad parts of yourself to find acceptance and balance. With curiosity about your whole self, you can work to withstand and welcome the world in a way that works for you.
Putting the pieces together
Prior to clinical mental health counseling, I studied linguistic anthropology and worked in higher education. While I enjoyed this field, I craved greater connection and opportunities for making meaning. So, I took night classes in counseling while working full-time, and the pieces started falling into place. By combining my previous experience at the intersection of culture, communication, and self with my new knowledge of the practice of psychotherapy, I found a unique framework through which to explore and assert autonomy, authenticity, and connection. In session, you will have the opportunity to reclaim and reshape your narrative through meaning-making systems that make sense to you; you are the author of your story, and I serve as a psychosocial thesaurus and supportive guide.
Parts of the whole
Underlying my narrative and feminist approach, I utilize a variety of evidence-based skill-building therapeutic modalities. To support you as you practice acting in alignment with your values and finding a sense of equanimity, I draw from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). For mindfulness, coping skills, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness skills, I utilize Dialectical Behavioral Therapeutic (DBT) techniques. For grounding techniques and nervous system regulation, I draw from Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP). As I assist you in mapping out your inner parts and their needs, I apply Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) to help you gain insight into your patterns and to understand and appreciate the complexity of your whole and healing self.
